Ferran Mascarell has been responsible for cultural policy for the city council of Barcelona and for the autonomous region of Catalunya. In the eighties he conceived the Centre de Cultura Contemporanea de Barcelona (CCCB), an institute that in 15 years has achieved a considerable track record on investigations and expositions on urban culture. His latest publication “Barcelona y la Modernidad” is an analysis and comment on the urban processes that he witnessed and participated in from 1977 to 2007. Here Mascarell proves himself an optimist: not afraid to mention the city’s weaknesses or to criticize failures in recent urban politics, but in the end he shows confidence in the urban potential of Barcelona.
